Inmarsat Fleet Secure - a multi-layered cyber security solution

As the data revolution continues to open new possibilities for the maritime industry, cybercriminals are increasingly looking for new opportunities to uncover network vulnerabilities. Online criminals don’t discriminate as they forage to find a vulnerability to penetrate your IT network and exploit you, your crew, and your vessel. With the average cyber breach costing £2.4m (Cranfield University 2019), the damage can be disastrous; compromised operations, loss of sensitive information, costly delays, rising insurance premiums, and unhappy clients, which can send your fleet’s reputation spiraling out of control.

Inmarsat has been pushing boundaries, in their relentless progress to connect the world’s oceans. This will protect the vessel’s network 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and allow crew to focus on their daily tasks with complete peace of mind.

Fleet Secure consists of three modules – Fleet Secure Endpoint, Fleet Secure Unified Threat Management, and Cyber Awareness Training. They are all designed to respond to a potential threat.

Fleet Secure Endpoint

With Fleet Secure Endpoint (FSE) Inmarsate is pioneering more than just an off-the-shelf IT anti-virus solution. They are offering continuous protection of all online endpoints on a vessel’s network. The service offers web content filtering and blocks malicious traffic whether incoming or outgoing. It will help defend potential vulnerability across the vessel network from all threats. These could be from a computer, crew laptop, USB, or onboard sensor. The service will automatically monitor, identify, and block any trace of infection.

The service includes a Security report feature that offers a clear overview of the security status of the vessel. The report can be used during port inspections to highlight the steps taken to protect the vessel and its assets.

The service provides a Risk Assessment report, and an Organizational Security Management Overview report, to support IMO 2021 compliance.

Fleet Secure Endpoint Portal

This suite of network security tools is designed specifically to continuously inspect, detect, and protect a vessel’s network. A compromised vessel network could lead to access on-board control systems this could result in massive business losses.

The system is managed via an online portal and backed by a dedicated Security Operations Centre to detect, monitor, and support threat management and operational activities. , Fleet Secure UTM makes managing data traffic more efficient. It intelligently scans all connected networks for malicious traffic. It comes as a complete package to protect your network from internet attacks and intrusion via infected USB or externally connected devices to the onboard LAN.

The Service provides real-time digital security status visibility and transparency. It allows traffic monitoring in the network and  users can act on individual cases to assess and mitigate the risks to ensure a cyber-secure environment.

Fleet Secure UTM supports the IMO 2021 functional cybersecurity requirements to demonstrate your cyber risk management, such as using the NIST cyber security framework to Identify, Protect, Detect, Respond, and Recover.

Fleet Secure Cyber Awareness

Inmarsat's Fleet Secure Cyber Awareness training program contains everything the crew needs to know to be aware of vulnerabilities and suspicious online behaviour. The training module is free for Fleet Secure Endpoint users.

Inmarsat believes that this system will power cyber resilience at sea, keeping vessel operations running and fully IMO-compliant without compromise.
