Prime Minister Modi Inaugurates India’s First Hydrogen Fuel Cell Ferry at Cochin Shipyard

In a significant advancement for India’s maritime capabilities, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated the first hydrogen fuel cell-operated ferry at Cochin Shipyard. This state-of-the-art vessel is a beacon of sustainable innovation and showcases the shipyard’s prowess in shipbuilding.

Vessel Details

A Leap into Sustainable Maritime Technology, the newly launched ferry, designed for 50 passengers, is a 24-meter-long catamaran featuring an air-conditioned cabin and constructed with high-grade fiberglass reinforced plastic. It is powered by five hydrogen cylinders, each with a capacity of 40kg, allowing for approximately eight hours of operation.

Hydrogen as a Maritime Fuel

Hydrogen is increasingly being recognized as a viable alternative to fossil fuels in the maritime industry. As a clean energy source, hydrogen fuel cells generate electricity through a chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen, emitting only water vapor as a byproduct. This aligns with global efforts towards decarbonization, offering a promising solution for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and combating climate change.

Challenges and Opportunities

While hydrogen presents numerous opportunities for the maritime sector, there are challenges to its widespread adoption. These include the need for more testing on safety aspects, handling, storage, and bunkering of hydrogen. Additionally, industry must address the low energy density of hydrogen and related shipping challenges.

Cochin Shipyard

India’s Maritime Crown Jewel Cochin Shipyard’s journey began in 1972, and over the years, it has emerged as a leader in the Indian shipbuilding industry3. The shipyard has delivered complex vessels such as the INS Vikrant, India’s first indigenous aircraft carrier, and has consistently secured international orders, reflecting its global competitiveness.

The rise of Cochin Shipyard

The shipyard’s rise can be attributed to its strategic collaborations, technological advancements, and consistent improvements in productivity. Its success in securing export orders is a testament to the aggressive marketing and enhancement of facilities over the last few years.

A New Chapter in India’s Maritime History

The inauguration of the hydrogen fuel cell ferry by PM Modi marks a new chapter in India’s maritime history. It not only demonstrates Cochin Shipyard’s capabilities but also India’s commitment to a sustainable future. As the vessel sets sail, it carries the nation’s aspirations for a cleaner, greener tomorrow.
